Benefits of the Holy Spirit
Peace Anaekwe | Life of a Believer

Do you know that as a believer you have the Holy Spirit living in you? This Holy Spirit was given as a seal of promise and there are benefits of the Holy Spirit in the life of a believer.

Growing up, I always thought that the spirit of God lived in ordained men of God and only on Sundays did I have the opportunity to experience the Holy Spirit because He will come upon me. Eventually, I grew in my knowledge of the word of God and understood that the Spirit of God lives in every believer.

The Holy Spirit is there to lead, guide and instruct us. When Christ rose, the same spirit that raised Him from the dead now lives in us (Romans 8:11). We cannot be disadvantaged because we have the Holy Spirit.

The Spirit of God gave us sonship because now we have the privilege to cry abba father as seen in Romans 8:15. The Holy Spirit living inside of us leads us because we are children of God as shown in Romans 8:14.

If we live by the Holy Spirit, we will see the benefits manifest in our lives. The Holy Spirit serves as a navigator in life because we cannot live life on our terms. We are empowered by the Holy Spirit to live the kind of life God has designed for us.

There are several benefits of the Holy Spirit living inside of us and I am going to talk about them as we go further into this blog post.

Who is the Holy Spirit?

The Holy Spirit is part of the three trinity which consists of the Father and Son. The Spirit of God dwells in us as believers. When we believed in the Gospel and became saved, we also received the Holy Spirit as part of our salvation package.

12 Benefits of the Holy Spirit

There are 12 benefits of the Holy Spirit living inside of you and they include:

1. The Holy Spirit Directs Us to Make Sound Decisions:

Every day we are faced with making decisions and this is why the Holy Spirit is there to direct us to make sound decisions. Our human minds are limited and frail but the Holy Spirit is there to lead us when confused in making decisions in different aspects of our life.

2. The Holy Spirit made Us a New Man in Christ Jesus:

The Holy Spirit has made us a new man in Christ Jesus. Romans 8:10 makes us understand that, if Christ is in us the body is dead because of sin but the Spirit is alive because of righteousness. The Spirit of God has made us the righteousness of God in Christ Jesus.

3. The Holy Spirit Works in Us to do His Will and Pleasure:

The Holy Spirit is now at work for us to do His will and good pleasure as stated in Philippians 2:13. This means that it is the Holy Spirit giving us direction on our affairs, prompting us when we do wrong, correcting our missteps, pointing us back to scriptures in the Bible etc. The Spirit of God is ever at work in you and me until the day of Christ as seen in Philippians 1:6

4. The Holy Spirit makes Our Prayer More Effective:

The Holy Spirit makes our prayer effective because it is he that intercedes for us in the place of prayer because we do not know what to pray for but the Spirit Himself makes intercession for us with groanings that cannot be uttered as cited in Romans 8:26.

This enables our prayers to be more effective because we pray with a deeper understanding. The Holy Spirit enables us to speak in tongues. Speaking in tongues is one of the signs that follow a believer as stated in Mark 16:17.

5. The Holy Spirit enables you to Produce Fruit of the Spirit

The Holy Spirit gives us the ability to produce the fruit of the Spirit as seen in Galatians 5:22-23. The Fruit of the Spirit is the product of the Spirit that now lives in us. The fact that we have the Spirit of God living in us means we possess these fruits.

The ability to have self-control, to love, be at peace, be joyful, be patient etc. is possible because of His spirit that dwells in us.

6. The Holy Spirit is a Great Friend and a Teacher:

The Holy Spirit is a friend like no other. God sent the Holy Ghost in Jesus’ name to teach us all things and put to our remembrance all things that Jesus taught as cited in John 14:26.

The Holy Spirit is a great friend because he resides in us and never leaves us. The Holy Spirit is always there to give us answers when we are clueless, to direct us when we are confused, to lead us in our everyday life, to correct us when we go wrong etc. There is no better friend and teacher besides the Holy Spirit.

7. The Holy Spirit Serves a Comforter in Times of Distress:

The Holy Spirit is a comforter when we go through seemingly difficult times in our lives. In life, the waters will not always be calm and there will be times we will experience turbulent waters. We have the Holy Spirit to comfort us in those turbulent seasons of our life.

The Holy Spirit didn’t just come to live in us, He also came to serve as a comforter in times of distress as seen in John 14:26. The Holy Spirit comforts us through constant communication with him when the going gets tough.

8. The Holy Spirit Guarantees Us of your salvation:

In Ephesians 1:14, we were made to understand that the Holy Spirit is the guarantee of our inheritance until the redemption of our purchased possession to the praise of His Glory. This explicitly shows that the Holy Spirit guarantees us our salvation.

9. The Holy Spirit Makes Us A Supplying Joint:

The Holy Spirit makes us a supplying joint by enabling us to walk in the supernatural (1 Corinthians 12:7-10). By the gifts of the Spirit, we can heal the sick, raise the dead, preach the Gospel and get people saved etc. We are empowered for good works by the Spirit of God (Philippians 2:13). The Spirit of God also gives us word of wisdom and knowledge for ourselves or others.

10. The Holy Spirit Gave Us Sonship:

The Holy Spirit made us be children of God because we didn’t receive the Spirit again to fear but the Spirit of adoption whereby we call Abba Father (Romans 8:15). The Spirit of God living inside of us is evidence that we belong to God (Romans 8:9Romans 8:14).

11. The Holy Spirit Made You A Permanent Resident:

The Holy Spirit lives in us forever. It made us permanent residents because it doesn’t leave our body for any reason, it is there to stay forever. The Spirit of God is a seal of promise in our lives. See Ephesians 1:13 below:

“In Him you also trusted, after you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation; in whom also, having believed, you were sealed with the Holy Spirit of promise.”

12. The Holy Spirit Defeats The Flesh:

When we walk by the Spirit, we will not fulfil the lust of the flesh. Our flesh and the Spirit of God on our inside do not work together. If our daily lives are directed by the Spirit of God, the flesh won’t control us because we will be conditioned by the Spirit to overcome the flesh and its desires (Galatians 5:16-17).

6 Scriptures on the Holy Spirit

1. Romans 8:14-16: For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God. For you did not receive the spirit of bondage again to fear, but you received the Spirit of adoption by whom we cry out, Abba Father. The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God.

2. John 14:16:  And I will pray the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may abide with you forever.

3. Acts 2:3-4: Then there appeared to them divided tongues, as of fire, and one sat upon each of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.

4. Matthew 28:19-20: Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age…

5. Romans 8:26: Likewise the Spirit also helps in our weaknesses. For we do not know what we should pray for as we ought, but the Spirit Himself makes intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered.

6. Ephesians 1:13: In Him you also trusted, after you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation; in whom also, having believed, you were sealed with the Holy Spirit of promise.
